As postpartum doulas we know how important it is for new parents to get outside. We have gathered here the eight best Ann Arbor area parks and outdoor spaces – perfect for unwinding and connecting with other parents while your newborn takes in the scenery around them. You will find something for everyone on this list whether you are in the mood for peaceful walks, lively playgrounds or just a space to sit and enjoy a snack.
Are you ready for outdoor adventures with your baby? As the warmer weather is upon us, you want to be anywhere but inside but might feel a bit panic-stricken by the planning! Trust us, now is the time to go outside and enjoy all that Ann Arbor has to offer, even with a newborn! There are so many amazing parks here that are perfect for the entire family.
It can be wonderful and rewarding to be a new parent, but it can also be tiring, stressful, and lonely. My daughter was born in the month of November, and I remember experiencing the days growing into weeks as the only trips outside were to the pediatrician. The leaves were almost gone, and it was very brown, then the snow started to fall. Once my sister (who was a lifesaver) left and there started to be signs of Spring, I was ready for fresh air and nature. It can be a blessing when you have been inside for much of the cold season. You may even find other new parents with kids the same age!
Gallup Park: A perfect family retreat
Gallup Park is one of the best places that new parents can take their infants to in Ann Arbor. It has many pathways and plenty of shady spots, which are perfect for walks with a stroller. In my experience, visiting on a quiet weekday morning is delightful.
The trails are outstanding
Stroll along the smooth, paved trails that follow along the Huron River meandering through beautiful gardens. As you walk, the river makes for a fun and sensory experience for your baby. Bonus, you will also get some exercise!
Playgrounds for the entire family
Their universally accessible playground has swings and play structures that are suitable for any age. Note: Do not forget to utilize the bucket swing for infants – it is safe and surprisingly fun for your child! My daughter even fell asleep several times!
Picnic time for families
Once done, you can relax on the benches and tables provided in the picnic areas. Enjoy your packed lunch while your baby watches the world (or takes a nap!). You might even meet and start a conversation with other parents enjoying the fresh air.
Buhr Park: Activities and amenities for the whole family
This family-friendly park has so much to offer for your brood. With splash pads, the historic Cobblestone farm, a barn with live animals for the kids to view, and winter activities, Buhr Park has something for every season.
Splash pad fun
The splash pad is where the action is when summer in Michigan gets hot. Watching your little one wiggle and giggle while playing in the water is a terrific way to beat the heat and make great memories at the same time. This was always a favorite spot to visit when my daughter was a toddler. She loved sitting in the water and just splashing away. She also enjoyed watching the other children her age. It is a suitable place for your curious and explorative toddler!
Stroll the nature trails
If your child is not the water type, the park has well-maintained walking paths surrounded by trees and greenery, where you can comfortably stroll around. Use this time to catch up with other parents or have a friend come along to enjoy the view and exchange stories of sleepless nights.
Winter fun and play areas
When snowflakes fall, Buhr Park becomes a winter wonderland, with sledding hills and ice skating. Even with your infant you can enjoy these amenities. Pack those boots, bundle up your baby, and join in the chilly adventure.
Matthaei Botanical Gardens: Beauty and education combined
An oasis of color and tranquility to explore, Matthaei Botanical Gardens, is a treat for infants and parents alike. My family loves the whimsical bonsai tree collection. We can spend hours admiring the beauty that each bonsai artist has created. We like to guess how long each owner has curated each bonsai tree (this information is often on display). Many frequently live well past one hundred years old!
Gardens of wonder
The large gardens have beautiful displays of plants, calm water features and colorful flower beds. Take your baby for a walk along the paved paths so they can hear and see the wonders of nature. You are in for a treat when you and baby watch butterflies fluttering around you!
Conservatory experience
When the weather does not cooperate, head inside the conservatory to enjoy a tropical escape. This warm environment displays exotic plants that your baby can take in, while you enjoy the humidity and relaxed atmosphere.
Events for families
Throughout the year, the Botanical Gardens host family-oriented events like workshops and guided tours, allowing you to connect with new parents. It is always good to keep an eye on their events calendar and join in.
Nichols Arboretum: Nature in every season
Nichols Arboretum, also called “the Arb” by the locals, is a beautiful place to get outside and walk no matter the season. Early Autumn is my family’s favorite time of year to enjoy this “Tree Town” treasure. The colors along the extensive trails are spectacular.
Baby-friendly walking paths
Paved walking paths throughout the 123-acre area are ideal for rolling strollers. Take in the beautiful seasonal blooms and foliage surrounding you both. I have always enjoyed bringing my daughter for a “lesson” on the different plants and flowers of the season.
Seasonal flora
One of the highlights is the peony garden which has what seems like endless amounts of flowers in late spring. When visiting at that magical time, take in the calming fragrant blooms and grab the opportunity to capture lovely photos of you and your little one. I enjoy taking pictures here each year to include in a calendar gift for the grandparents!
Educational programs
Both you and your little one can take in Michigan’s native ecosystem during a guided or self-guided tour at the Arb. There are numerous topics covered with suitable content for young children, parents, and even infants. You will learn a great deal and revel in watching your baby discover outdoors for the first time. This is a wonderful place for school field trips, homeschool groups, and families eager to learn!
Mill Creek Park North: A Dexter gem
For those venturing outside of Ann Arbor, you need to include Mill Creek Park North on your list. In Dexter, this park provides a tranquil setting for all ages. My kiddo’s favorite activity has always been to wade in the creek water looking for crawfish or visiting the friendly troll statue along the boardwalk.
Peaceful surroundings
On the river’s edge you will discover wooded and grassy areas, and a stunning view. For quieter times with your infant, enjoy a slow walk or simply find a quiet spot to sit and read a book from the Dexter Library, which is located only steps away and overlooks the park. The children’s section has the most beautiful view of the train bridge over the river. Bonus for your baby if you can see a train go by while enjoying the scenic view!
Picnic tables and benches
Pack lunch and a blanket and eat in the company of nature. There are an abundance of picnic tables and benches available to stop and stay a while. If you are feeling adventurous, A & A&W Drive-In is across the way. Grab a coney and fries for you and enjoy while baby naps!
Walkability for strollers
You will not have any problems navigating the smooth walking paths with a stroller at this park. You may also see a squirrel or two. Your baby’s reactions are sure to be adorable! Do not forget to stop and say hello to my child’s favorite – the friendly troll!
Riverside Park: A place to relax in Ypsilanti
Riverside Park, in the center of Ypsilanti and linking downtown to the historic Depot Town, is perfect for families who want a peaceful, green environment in an urban location. In addition, events at this park are abundant and enjoyable.
Relaxed atmosphere
This park is along the beautiful Huron River, which makes the environment very relaxing for parents and newborns. This is a good place to wear your baby as you go for a walk, listen to the river, and appreciate the natural environment. You could also meet other new parents along the way!
Family-friendly and accessible
Riverside Park is linked to the Border-to-Border trail and has a great deal of parking off of a cross street which makes it easy to access. When you get there, you can set up snack time on one of the picnic tables this park provides. Take in the outdoors while your baby sleeps or enjoys feeding and snuggling time.
Connection to nature
The park’s mature trees will provide shade for you and your newborn while on a relaxing stroller walk. The paved trails are unobstructed for easy access. You will enjoy breathing in fresh air and exercising gently while your newborn is sleeping or enjoying the surroundings.
Curtiss Park: Saline’s secret
Curtiss Park in Saline is the last stop on our tour, but it is certainly not the least. Known as “four parks in one”, it is a perfect place to get away from home and your busy, new-parent life.
Scenic beauty all around
Picturesque and close to home, Curtiss Park offers wooded nature trails, walking paths, and access to the Saline River for river activities. You and your baby will enjoy the surrounding views as you soak up precious time away from home. Our favorite spot is relaxing on the benches near the river. When I was a new mom, my daughter loved watching the ducks from the observation deck overlooking the river!
Family-friendly amenities
Curtiss Park has a myriad of facilities open to the public; there are picnic areas and walking paths, all stroller-friendly, playground equipment for all ages, a pavilion, and a baseball field. Due to the accessibility, it is a favorite spot for families with babies to enjoy the swings, soak up the sun, or go for walk.
Outdoor fun
Your baby will love tummy time in the grass or to feel the wind on their face as you relish in the quiet. You are also likely to come across other families who are ready to interact and share stories about newborn life and survival tips.
